Cultivating a Peaceful Prayer Life: The Benefits of Keeping a Prayer Journal

Each day, we can place our plans, worries, hopes, and fears in the hands of The Lord. One effective way to do this is by keeping a prayer journal to record both the requests we ask and the answers we receive. While no one is obligated to maintain a prayer journal, I find that having a list of things to pray about keeps my thoughts focused.

The Importance of a Prayer Journal

Over the years, I’ve made several attempts at creating journals and planners. Truth be told, simplicity has always improved my prayer life. I have a list of the names of family and friends, a list of those who serve the community, state, country, and world, and a list of organizations I support. I also use a calendar to remember to pray for special events and occasions. Additionally, I have a list reminding me to pray for the lost to be saved.

These lists don’t change very often; they serve as reminders to help me stay focused. There are always special requests from my loved ones and others that do change frequently. Honestly, I don’t always write these down; I mentally add them to my existing lists as I go.

Simplifying Your Prayer Routine

When you start making lists and really try to keep track of everything, it can become overwhelming very quickly. Prayer time isn’t meant to increase our anxiety; it’s supposed to help us lay our worries at the feet of The One who can handle it all.

Introducing the Prayer Map

To help cultivate a powerful and peaceful prayer life, I created a “prayer map.” This simple tool can be downloaded here, or you can follow the steps outlined below.

Daily Prayer Map

Step 1: Praise & Thanksgiving

Remember to praise God for who He is and all He’s done. This will help you maintain a proper perspective. It’s easier to trust when we remember He’s in control.

Step 2: Heart & Home

Ask the Lord to help you in your walk with Him. Remember to pray for your family and friends by name if you wish.

Step 3: Caring for Community

Focus on the people around you: your neighbors, schools, jobs, churches, and leadership (both state and local). Also, remember those who work in emergency services and law enforcement.

Step 4: Addressing the Nation

Lift up the executives, judges, and legislatures in prayer. Ask God to give them the wisdom to make godly decisions. Remember our military and their families.

Step 5: Reaching the World

Ask the Lord to help us reach the world with the Gospel. Pray that the hearts of world leaders would be turned to the Lord. Pray for missionaries and those within the Body of Christ around the world to be bold in their faith and mission.

Step 6: Pray for the Lost

Ask the Lord to help us be a light to a lost world. Pray for opportunities to reach those around you with the Gospel. Pray that the hearts of the lost will be softened and ready to receive the gift that God so freely gives.

Step 7: The Praise Goes On

As you end your prayer, remember to thank God, knowing He has heard you and will work His will in all the requests you bring before Him.

Conclusion

I hope these simple steps make it easier for you to cover everything in prayer, keep your worries at bay, and fill you with hope as you are reminded of the Lord’s goodness and strength. For more Bible study, prayer, and faith-based tips, check out our free resources from The Chapel.
