Good Experience With The Good & The Beautiful

Homeschool Curriculum Choice

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with The Good and The Beautiful. The following is solely my opinion and based on my experience.

During the 2023-2024 school year, I had the opportunity to work as a homeschool math teacher.

My brother and sister-in-law homeschool their son and daughter. When my nephew faced challenges concentrating on his math work during his 1st-grade year, I stepped in to assist during his 2nd-grade year. We met online via Google Meet Monday-Friday, focusing on his math curriculum.

His parents had chosen The Good and The Beautiful (TGTB) as their homeschool curriculum, which I found to be an excellent choice. TGTB offers its math and language arts curriculum for FREE as PDF files online. This allowed me to work with my nephew online using the PDFs while he had a physical copy of the book to write in.

The Math 2 course effectively met grade 2 standards, and my nephew enjoyed the simple games and activities presented throughout. With the scripted lessons provided, teaching the material was straightforward.

As this was our first year together and with the curriculum, I used the Math K and Math 1 workbooks to assess where to start in our math class. The unit and course assessments in each book (or PDF) simplified the process of ensuring we covered necessary concepts without overworking those my nephew already understood.

While a Math 2 Box is recommended for the full course experience, we managed well with the Math 1 Box we had. On occasion, we needed additional materials like dice or cut-outs for certain activities, which were easy to acquire.

Although we encountered a few instances where the phrasing or a particular model didn’t click, flexibility in lesson completion is common in homeschooling. Adjustments were made as needed to ensure understanding.

Regarding the curriculum's religious aspect, TGTB does promote Christian values, with occasional references to God creating a beautiful world. As a Christian family, this was acceptable to us, but it's worth considering if it doesn't align with your beliefs.

Overall, my experience with The Good and The Beautiful was positive. I could closely follow the curriculum, resulting in a successful year of online math sessions. I highly recommend TGTB to other homeschooling families, especially given the availability of their free math and language arts resources.

I plan to share more about my experience with The Good and The Beautiful and online teaching in future posts.
